Abstract

1,151,316. Sulphur. PINTSCH BAMAG A.G. 7 Sept., 1967 [7 Sept., 1966], No. 41029/67. Heading C1A. In the process for producing sulphur by the Claus process, H 2 S is reacted with a deficiency of O 2 ; the resultant gases after separation of sulphur, consisting of H 2 S and a little SO 2 , are cooled and passed with O 2 through active carbon to form and deposit sulphur; the charged carbon is desorbed with a hot inert gas or steam; and the desorbed gases are recycled to the initial H#2S/O 2 reaction. The H 2 S and O 2 may be passed to a combustion vessel where S is deposited and SO 2 also formed, and the gases passed to a first catalytic reactor where H 2 S and SO 2 react to give further S, then through first and second heat exchangers to condense out S. The gases return through the first exchanger and are passed to a second catalytic reactor, then cooled in a third heat exchanger to separate further S, mixed with O 2 or air and passed through the carbon. Desorption may be effected with inert gas at above 220‹ C. or steam at 300-400‹ C.; with steam, the gases contain some H 2 S and SO 2 in addition to S. The desorbed gases may be recycled to the combustion reactor or to the first or third heat exchanger.
