Abstract
1,154,058. Formaldehyde. PERSTORP A.B. 20 Sept., 1967 [27 Sept., 1966], No. 42779/67. Heading C2C. Formaldehyde is produced by the oxidation of methanol with a surplus of air in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst, the air being preheated in a co-current heat-exchanger by the hot gases from the reaction. The methanol may be first evaporated and preheated, e.g. by steam in a counter-current heat exchanger, and then mixed with the heated air, or evaporated by the heated air in an evaporator, with subsequent re-heating of the gas mixture if necessary, or may be injected straight into the hot air stream. The temperature in the reactor is regulated in the usual way with a heat transfer medium, itself cooled in a heatexchanger and the surplus heat used to generate steam. After cooling in the co-current heat exchanger, the reaction gases are passed to an absorption system for absorption of the formaldehyde, e.g. in water.
