Abstract

Catalytic apparatus; nitrogen oxides, catalytic production of by combustion of ammonia. - In the oxidation of ammonia by passing it in admixture with oxygen or air enriched with oxygen over a catalytic material, steam is added to the gas mixture to render it non-explosive. Ammonia solution is sprayed through a nozzle c in the presence of oxygen or a gas rich in oxygen admitted by a pipe b and becomes evaporated in a heated spiral a, preferably of aluminium and packed with aluminium turnings; the resulting gas mixture passes to a preheater e, consisting of a number of aluminium pipes heated by hot gases; the gas mixture then proceeds to the converter g containing the catalyst, such as heated platinum gauzes; the products are cooled and absorbed in a vessel i, any remaining nitrogen oxides passing by the outlet ! l to an absorption tower. The original gas mixture may be enriched with either oxygen or ammonia by admitting a supply through an inlet pipe between the evaporator and the preheater; alternatively, water may be sprayed or steam admitted into the evaporator and ammonia gas then introduced by the intermediate inlet pipe. Also, a further supply of oxygen may be admitted by a pipe h into the cooler i, if the higher oxides of nitrogen are to be produced.
