Abstract

Oxidation products, which have wetting properties and emulsify substances such as asphalts and tars are obtained by subjecting aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons first to a treatment with mineral acids and then to oxidation with oxygen containing nitrogen compounds. The treatment with mineral acids such as concentrated sulphuric acid, oleum, phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid may be effected in the presence of propyl or butylnaphthalene sulphonic acid or other dispersing agent. In examples: (1) a brown coal hydrogenation product is treated with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and then with ammonium nitrate; (2) a brown coal hydrogenation product is treated with hydrochloric acid and then with nitric acid. The products may be worked up so as to obtain mono and dicarboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and esters, e.g. esters of the acids used for the pretreatment.ALSO:Oxidation products which comprise mono and dicarboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and esters and are stated to have emulsifying properties are obtained by subjecting aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons first to a treatment with mineral acids and then to oxidation with oxygen containing nitrogen compounds. In examples, brown coal hydrogenation products are treated with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and then with nitric acid or ammonium nitrate. The emulsification of asphalts and tar is mentioned.
