Separating gases by liquefaction. - Oxides of nitrogen are liquefied by cooling in the presence of small amounts of anhydrous nitric acid which may contain nitrogen oxides; the liquefaction may be assisted by pressure. The acid may be added e.g., to gases obtained by burning ammonia, or it may be present in the gases to be condensed; or oxygen and wa.ter vapour may be allowed to be present in sufficient amounts to form acid. Undiluted nitrogen peroxide obtained by warming nitric acid in which nitrogen oxides have been dissolved is liquefied by cooling water at 18‹ C. when 2-4 per cent of nitric acid vapour by volume is present.
