Abstract

1,209,002. Sulphuric acid preparation. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 9 April, 1969 [13 April, 1968], No. 18195/69. Heading C1A. Sulphuric acid is produced by oxidizing sulphur dioxide, contained in gases from roasting or combustion gases, over a catalyst and absorbing the resulting sulphur trioxide in sulphuric acid, passing the residual gases through granular activated carbon at 60‹ to 160‹ C. over which is trickled dilute sulphuric acid, and recirculating this sulphuric acid to the means for absorbing sulphur trioxide. The activated carbon may suitably be impregnated with a noble metal. Suitable equipment for carrying out the above process is shown in Fig. 2. The sulphur dioxidecontaining gas passes through conduit 1, heat exchangers 7 ,2a and 2b and catalyst beds 3a, 3b and 3c. The gas leaving stage 3c is rich in sulphur trioxide and passes into an interstage absorber 8 through which passes sulphuric acid. The scrubbed gas then passes via line 9 into a reactor 20 containing a bed of activated carbon. over which flows dilute sulphuric acid. This acid removes any remaining traces of sulphur dioxide and is then recirculated to the sulphur trioxide absorbing means 8 from which concentrated sulphuric acid having a concentration greater than 96% by weight may be removed via line 12.
