Abstract
127,183. Grayson, J. Oct. 31, 1918. Nitrogen oxides; sulphuric acid.-Nitric acid is reduced by sulphur dioxide and the nitric oxide produced is purified by washing with water and then with dilute soda and air is then added to produce N2O3 which is absorbed in soda solution. Nitric acid is prepared in a retort B from sulphuric acid and sodium nitrate, and sulphur dioxide in a retort A, for instance by the process described in Specification 132,387. The sulphur dioxide is led into the retort B, and the mixed gases pass into a tube C in which sulphuric acid condenses and is collected in a trap F and tank G which supplies the retort B. The gas is washed by water and soda in packed towers H, K respectively, and from the tower K passes by a pipe k having two sight-tubes k<1>, k<2>, Fig. 2, with an air inlet k<3> between them. Air is admitted in the requisite quantity, and the gas then passes to the soda absorption tower L, the exit gases escaping by a pipe l having two sight-tubes l<1>, l<2>, with an air inlet l<3> between them, Fig. 1. The admission of air by the inlet k<3> is controlled by testing the gas in the pipe l. If the correct amount of air has been added, there will be a small quantity of nitric acid in the pipe l, which will be colourless in the tube l<1>, but on admission of a little air by l<3> will show a slight colour in l<2>. As the absorption proceeds, more soda ash is added to the liquor in the tower L.
