Abstract
329,427. Hercules Powder Co., .(Assignees of Shapleigh, J. H.). Jan. 28, 1929, [Convention date]. Gases, treating with liquids. - Nitric acid of high concentration is produced by absorbing oxides of nitrogen, passing from inlet c, Fig. 1, upwards through a packed tower a by means of water flowing downwards through the tower from a spray e provided with a valve f. The spent gases emerge from the tower by pipe band concentrated nitric acid is collected from pipe o. The tower is cooled by water from pipe i passing over its surface through flanges g and g<1> and collected by flange g<11> drained by pipe k. The packing, Fig. 2, consists of glass cylinders m, each containing an irregular mass of acid-resisting material n. The oxygen for the oxdation of nitric acid to nitrogen peroxide is supplied by air introduced into the tower either independently or together with the nitrogen oxide gases.
