Abstract
339,274. Johnson., J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 30, 1929. Hydrocarbons.-The cracking of hydrocarbons in the gaseous or vaporous state is effected in the presence of a catalyst consisting of one or more pieces of silicon which may take the form of bricks moulded from powdered silicon. Alternatively, the silicon may be deposited on a carrier. Cracking may be effected under reduced, atmospheric, or elevated pressures, e.g. 5 to 200 atmospheres or more, and the temperature may vary from 200‹ C. to 900‹ C. The gases or vapours to be treated may be diluted with other gases or vapours such at nitrogen, methane, water vapour, &c. In an example, a gaseous mixture containing butane and propane is passed through a quartz tube filled with pieces of silicon at about 700‹ C., ethylene, propylene, and butylene being formed. In other examples, the vapours of pentane, ligroin, paraffin and American petroleum are cracked, with or without dilution with nitrogen, under the same conditions. It is stated that there is no deposit of carbon on the catalyst. Specification 296,752 is referred to.
