Abstract

<PICT:0953137/C3/1> <PICT:0953137/C3/2> A tubular hydrocarbon cracking reactor in a furnace comprises first and second sections, the first section (2) being substantially circular in cross-section and the second (3) having one axis longer than the other, the second section being positioned so that its broader side(s) face(s) the furnace heating means (7). In a preferred embodiment the second section 3 is substantially rectangular (see Fig. 4); cross-pieces 8 connect the broad sides and serve to support and maintain the cross-sectional profile and to cause turbulent flow. Preferably the ratio of lengths of the first to second sections is 1 : 1-1 : 2, of cross-sectional areas is 1 : 1-3 : 1 and of surface area/capacity ratios is 1 : 2-1 : 5. Acetylene and ethylene can be produced in the apparatus by pyrolysis of gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons with recycled residual gas and in the presence of an inert diluent such as steam. Cracking to olefines occurs in the first section and to acetylene in the second.
