Abstract
1440424 Cracking crude oil to give olefins UNION CARBIDE CORP 8 July 1974 [9 July 1973] 30119/74 Heading C5E Crude oil is cracked to give lower olefins by a process comprising: (a) introducing into an adiabatic reaction zone at about sonic velocity and an inlet temperature of 1500‹ to 3000‹ C., a mixture of combustion gases produced from tho essentially complete combustion of a fuel gas and oxygen mixed together with steam, the reaction zone being constructed in such a manner that the gases expand on entry into said reaction zone; (b) introducing crude oil into the gases in the reaction zone in a ratio of 0À5 to 1 part by weight of crude oil per part by weight of gases and at an inlet pressure of 100 to 1000 p.s.i.g. at at least one point of entry located in that portion of the reaction zone close to the area where the gases begin to expand, said crude oil being introduced in a downstream direction with the flow of the gases in such a manner that essentially all of the crude oil vaporizes into the gases wherein the temperature of the mixture and the inlet temperature of the crude oil are sufficient to maintain the viscosity of the crude oil below 10 centiposes prior to vaporization, and wherein the outlet temperature of the reaction zone is in the range of 600‹ to 1100‹C., the pressure of the reaction zone is in the range of 5 to 30 p.s.i.g., and the residence time of the crude oil and products thereof in the reaction zone is 10 to 60 milliseconds; (c) passing the effluent from the reaction zone into a quenching zone having a sufficiently low temperature to stop the reaction essentially instantaneously; and (d) recovering the effluent from the quenching zone. The fuel gas comprises H 2 and optionally methane or propane.
