Abstract

An acetylene-containing gas is obtained by partially combusting in a combustion zone a fuel-containing stream with not more than 90% of the oxygen required for complete combustion, adding a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbons and further oxygen in a cracking zone whereby the hydrocarbons are converted to an acetylene-containing gas and quenching. The fuel may be hydrogen or a gaseous, liquid or solid hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixture; oxygen, preferably 35-50% of the stoichiometric proportion, is added as industrial oxygen, or air to which oxygen or inert gases or vapours may be added. At least one reactant is preheated to 100-850 DEG C. Preferably the combustion is effected as in Specification 780,120 in which one stream is introduced through a central opening in one wall of a cylindrical chamber in the form of a hollow cone and the other with a rotatory motion through an opening in the same wall around the cone whereby a double toroidal vortex flame is formed. The temperature of the combustion products is preferably 1,300-2,000 DEG C. The hydrocarbons added in the cracking zone preferably boil below 400 DEG C. and contain straight chain paraffins; they are preheated to 300-600 DEG C. They may be injected in two stages, the second being downstream from the first and the ratio of the amount injected through the first to that through the second may be 2-3, the total amount being 1-5 kg./kg. of fuel. The oxygen, preheated, is injected at or near the first of these stages and in an amount such that the total oxygen supplied is 80-100% of the stoichiometric proportion for the combustion of the fuel. Steam may be added with the fuel and/or hydrocarbons and/or oxygen streams in a total amount of 0.3-3 kg./kg. of fuel. The pressure is preferably below 5 kg./cm.2 absolute and the cracking reaction time below 5 X 10-3 sec., quenching to below 600 DEG C. being effected with water.
