Abstract

<PICT:0821856/IV (a)/1> In a process which comprises pyrolysing a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon to obtain a more unsaturated hydrocarbon, preheated streams of a fuel gas and an oxidant are mixed, preferably in stoichiometric proportions, each stream having a velocity greater than 0.5 Mach number and being impinged at a substantial angle to each other, the mixture burned, and the preheated hydrocarbon, at a velocity above 0.5 Mach number, is mixed with the combustion products, the reaction products are quenched within 4 milli-seconds and the unsaturated products separated. Under suitable conditions the remaining products are combustible and are recycled to be used as the fuel gas. The reaction may be effected in an apparatus shown in Fig. 1. Oxygen is introduced to the mixer by conduit 14 and fuel to the internal injector 30 by conduit 22. Mixing takes place in the conical, annular space 42 and the mixed reactants are burned in the combustion chamber 44 having an expanding cross-section leading into a cylindrical chamber 46. Hydrocarbon to be pyrolised is introduced into the combustion products by tubes 54 from conduit 50. The injector 30 has tubes 60 and 62 provided for cooling and the combustion chamber is surrounded by ducts 70, 74 for cooling fluid.
