Abstract

<PICT:0687867/III/1> Furnace black is rendered more adsorptive by subjecting it in suspension in products of combustion containing uniformly dispersed therein 0.1 to 2 per cent free oxygen to temperatures within the range of 2000 DEG F to 2500 DEG F for a period of time within the range of 0.1 to 0.5 seconds. The treatment is preferably effected in the carbon black furnace in a zone just subsequent to that in which the carbon black is formed, for example by mixing about 5 per cent air by volume with the furnace gases resulting from combustion and decomposition of hydrocarbons with insufficient air to complete combustion. In the preferred embodiment, Fig. 1, air and fuel gas are injected from pipes 9 and 11 respectively into a burner block 6 at one end of an elongated combustion chamber 1, the apparatus being of the type disclosed in Specification 654,865. Hydrocarbon to be decomposed is injected to the furnace from an annular pipe 15 through radial jets 16, the trajectory of the jets being so controlled that the streams fail to meet and thus leave a channel through which oxygen containing gases may pass, such oxygen becoming intimately mixed with the make gas after the latter has been decomposed to form carbon black in suspension. Specifications 654,864 and 673,401 also are referred to.
