Abstract

A fuel mixture obtained from coke oven or other hydrocarbon - containing industrial gases by compression, cooling, or absorption processes, and for the most part liquid at normal temperature and 20--30 atmospheres pressure consists of about 20--30 per cent ethane and ethylene, 30--40 per cent propylene and butylene, and 30 per cent propane, butane, and pentane, with small quantities of carbon monoxide, methane, nitrogen, hydrogen, &c. The mixture may also include benzene obtained from the coke oven gas, or benzine or other washing oils, e.g. toluol, heavy benzenes, resulting from washing the coke oven gas in the extraction process. In an example a coke oven gas is compressed to 12 atmospheres and cooled to 140 DEG C. by partial expansion. Liquefied constituents separated out comprise a mixture of 15 per cent ethylene, 7 per cent ethane, 39 per cent propylene and butylene, 30 per cent propane, butane, and pentane, 6 per cent methane, and 1 per cent carbon monoxide with a residue of benzine and benzene.
