Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons are produced by contacting a non-aromatic hydrocarbon feed containing at least 6 carbon atoms with a dehydrocyclization catalyst, the feed being mixed with hydrogen and a mono-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbon. The mole ratio of hydrogen to total hydrocarbon may be 0À1 to 5: 1 and the mono-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbon which is preferably a recycled portion of the product may be present in amount 10-90% by wt. of the total hydrocarbon. The catalyst may be an alkali metal-promoted Group VI metal oxide supported on an inert carrier, e.g. Na- Cr 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 . Dehydrocyclization conditions may be 482-649 C. and a pressure of 0À07- 3.5 kg/cm.2 gauge. Examples describe the preparation of benzene from various C 6 non- aromatic hydrocarbons, and of toluene from nheptane.
