Abstract
1,152,710. Hydrogenating aromatic hydrocarbons. AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc. 6 Oct., 1966 [6 Oct., 1965], No. 44698/66. Heading C5E. Aromatic hydrocarbons are hydrogenated to the corresponding cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons in 3 reaction zones by the following process sequence: (1) 20-35 weight per cent of the aromatic feed is mixed with hydrogen and corresponding cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and contacted with hydrogenation catalyst in the first zone to effect substantially complete hydrogenation of the aromatic present; (2) the effluent from the first zone is cooled by admixture with the remaining 65-80 weight per cent of the aromatic feed and additional cycloaliphatic; (3) the mixture from (2) is contacted with catalyst in the second zone to effect hydrogenation of 35-60% of the aromatic present; (4) the second zone effluent is cooled by indirect heat exchange, e.g. with the first zone feed; (5) the cooled effluent from (4) is completely hydrogenated in the third zone; (6) the third zone effluent is separated into liquid and vapour phases; (7) part of the vapour phase containing hydrogen is recycled to the first zone; (8) part of the liquid phase comprising cycloaliphatic product is recycled to the first and second zones; and (9) the remainder of the liquid phase is recovered as product. The catalysts are conventional, and the process is suitable for the hydrogenation of benzene, toluene and xylenes to corresponding cyclohexanes and of naphthalene to tetralin or decalin.
