Abstract

554,753. Sebacic and hydroxy-decanoic acids. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Nov. 25, 1941, No. 15172. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Sebacic acid and octanol-2 or omega-hydroxy decanoic acid and methyl hexyl ketone are made by heating a ricinoleic acid compound with a strong alkali in an inert organic medium such as a hydrocarbon oil. Ricinoleic acid or its esters or amide, castor oil or grape-seed oil may be used as the ricinoleic acid compound and the organic medium may be one having a boiling point above 180‹ C. such as mineral oils, diphenyl, naphthalene, alkylated naphthalenes, and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons such as chlornaphthalenes. For the production of sebacic acid the temperature should be 240-340‹ C. and for omega-hydroxy decanoic acid 180-220‹ C. The reaction is preferably effected at atmospheric pressure, and the octanol-2 or methyl hexyl ketone distil over with any water present. Examples are given.
