Abstract

Olefins are obtained by oxidizing paraffins in the liquid phase in the presence of boric acid to obtain alkyl esters of boric acid, heating the product in the presence of sufficient boric acid to give a total boric acid to ester ratio at least equivalent to that in esters of metaboric acid and decomposing the esters by heating to give olefins. The paraffin feed is preferably a C10-C18 feedstock having at least 95% normal paraffins and is oxidized at 100-300 DEG C. in the presence of 5-10% by weight of boric acid to obtain up to 30% conversion. The product is then heated to 100-300 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure, if necessary and with added boric acid if required to give a total boric acid content of at least 62 g. per g. mol. of converted paraffin. Unconverted paraffins are removed before or after this treatment and recycled. The esters are finally decomposed by heating to 200-450 DEG C., removing the olefins as vapours; this stage may be combined with the thermal treatment. The product may be used for preparing detergent alkylate.
