Abstract
Cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are produced by oxidizing cyclohexane in the liquid phase by means of a gas containing molecular oxygen, the reaction being carried out in the presence of an oxidation catalyst and a lower saturated aliphatic anhydride, such as acetic anhydride. The proportion of acid anhydride employed is 1.0% to 50% based on the weight of cyclohexane. The oxidation is preferably carried out at a temperature of 120 DEG C.-165 DEG C. under a pressure of 50-250 p.s.i.g. The preferred oxidation catalyst is cobalt naphthenate, but hydrocarbonsoluble compounds of copper, aluminium, chromium and manganese may also be used. Cyclohexanone may be added as an oxidationinitiator. The examples relate to the oxidation of petroleum cyclohexane that contained 87.6% cyclohexane by weight.
