Abstract

Aromatic carboxylic acids or intermediate oxidation products thereof are prepared by the oxidation in the liquid phase of aromatic compounds having one or more aliphatic side-chains with molecular oxygen in the presence of a metal oxidation catalyst and in a reaction medium comprising an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 2-8 carbon atoms, wherein the oxidation of substantial quantities of the reaction medium is prevented by maintaining the oxygen content of the exit gas from the reaction at less than 15% by volume. In an example p-diisopropylbenzene is oxidised in glacial acetic acid using manganese acetate as catalyst, to terephthalic acid.
