Abstract
Bis-(p-alkylphenoxy)-alkanes of formula: <FORM:0864734/IV (b)/1> wherein R and R1 are alkyl groups and X = 2, 3 or 4 are oxidised to the corresponding bis-(p-carboxyphenoxy)-alkanes in an organic liquid medium which is stable under the oxidation conditions, by means of oxygen or a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the conjoint presence of a heavy metal oxidation catalyst and bromine. In Examples 1:4 bis(p-methylphenoxy)- butan and 1:2-bis (p-methylphenoxy)-ethane are oxidised to the corresponding acids in acetic or propionic acid medium with oxygen using a mixture of cobalt and manganese bromides as catalyst.
