Abstract

Aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing unsubstituted or substituted alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons or partially oxidized derivatives thereof in the liquid phase by means of molecular oxygen or ozone, employing as a catalyst a salt of cobalt and/or manganese, and employing as reaction medium a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, the process being characterized by being conducted in the presence of a compound of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, beryllium, magnesium, zinc or cadmium, at least some of which is present in ionic form, having a concentration of 0.00025 to 0.25 gram atom of metal per gram mol. of total organic compound, but excluding the oxidation of p-diisopropyl benzene in the presence of a catalyst comprising both a manganese compound and a barium compound. Temperatures of 50 DEG to 300 DEG C. and pressures up to 200 atmos. are mentioned. Bromine may be introduced into the reaction mixture. Preferably a mixture of cobalt and manganese catalysts, preferably bromides, is used. Partially oxidized aromatic hydrocarbons include alcohols, aldehydes and ketones. The hydrocarbons and partially oxidized derivatives may be substituted by groups resistant to oxidation such as halogen, sulphonamide, ether, acylamino, carboxyl, sulphonic acid and ester, amide, disubstituted amino, benzoyl, alkyl carboxylic ester, and haloalkyl.
