Abstract
Unsaturated a -chlor acids are made by oxidation with molecular oxygen of a -chlor a -b -unsaturated aldehydes at temperatures below 100 DEG C. Preferably the aldehyde is in solution in a solvent and the quantity of aldehyde present in the solvent at any time should be small, which may be effected by adding the aldehyde intermittently in portions or continuously. An oxygen-carrying catalyst such as a compound of copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel, vanadium, iron, chromium, uranium, tungsten or molybdenum may be employed. If the solvent is an alcohol, the product is the corresponding ester. Some hydrochloric acid is evolved in the reaction, and to prevent this adding on to the aldehyde, water may be added or the hydrochloric acid may be carried off by excess of the oxidizing gas, or the catalyst may be a carboxylate which reacts with hydrochloric acid. Examples describe the oxidation of a -chloracrolein and a -chlorcrotonaldehyde, in one case ethyl alcohol being present to produce ethyl a -chloracrylate. Solvents specified in the examples are acetone and acetic acid, but in one case no solvent is used, the temperature being 10-20 DEG C. Specifications 514,619, 560,166 and 573,723 are referred to.
