Abstract
Acetic acid and/or secondary butyl acetate is produced by treating secondary butanol in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen, or a gaseous mixture containing it, at a temperature of at least 120 DEG C. and at elevated pressure in the presence of a metal oxidation catalyst. Preferably the temperature is maintained in the range 120-160 DEG C. and the pressure exceeds 150 lb./sq. inch. It is convenient to carry out the reaction in the presence of a solvent, fatty acids containing 2-6 carbon atoms per molecule being particularly preferred. The catalyst may be any of the usual oxidation catalysts, e.g. a manganese or cobalt salt. The preferred salts are acetates. It is desirable to add a small proportion of an initiator to the mixture and for this purpose methyl ethyl ketone or an aliphatic aldehyde may be used. The reaction may be carried out batchwise or continuously.
