Abstract

Aldehydes are produced from mixtures of olefines, particularly aliphatic mono-olefines having 3 and 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, in which ethylene is also present by decreasing the ethylene in the mixture to not more than 5 per cent by volume and continuously reacting the resultant product with carbon monoxide and hydrogen at superatmospheric pressure and elevated temperature in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a cobalt salt of an organic acid dissolved in the liquid. Suitable reaction conditions are a ratio by volume of hydrogen: carbon monoxide of 3 : 1, a temperature in the range of 100-180 DEG C., pressure of 200-300 atm. and a gas: liquid olefine volumetric ratio of from 1000 : 1 to 3000 : 1. If desired an inert solvent for the reactants may be present. Suitable organic salts of cobalt are, for example, the naphthenate and acetate. The salt is preferably introduced as a solution in the reactant or in an inert organic solvent for the reactants. The ethylene is preferably removed from the reactants before introduction of the catalyst and may be removed, for example, by distillation. In the example, di-isobutene is substantially freed from ethylene and is treated with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of cobalt naphthenate to give nonyl aldehyde.
