Abstract

d -Valerolactone is prepared by reacting d -hydroxy valeric aldehyde or its isomer epoxy 1-5 pentanol-5 with oxygen at superatmospheric temperature. Oxidation catalysts such as the oxides and salts of metals other than copper, having more than one valency state may be present, for example, cerium, cobalt, lead, manganese and chromium. When the reaction is carried out in the liquid phase, the catalyst selected should be soluble in the reaction mixture; the acetates, stearates, oleates and naphthenates of the abovementioned metals are salts soluble to an adequate extent. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of solvents such as acetic acid which are not oxidized under the reaction conditions. In the absence of a catalyst, the reaction proceeds at a reasonable rate at 90 DEG to 100 DEG C., but is slow below 80 DEG C. In examples: (1) air is bubbled through dry d -hydroxy valeric acid aldehyde at 100 DEG C. with stirring to form the lactone; (2) the reaction of (1) is carried out in the presence of cobalt acetate at 80-90 DEG C.
