Abstract

Unsaturated monocarboxylic acids are prepared by oxidising an olefine in the vapour phase in a single stage with molecular oxygen, in the presence as a catalyst of phospho-molybdic acid in admixture with arsenic or an arsenic containing compound. Propylene and/or isobutylene are converted to acrylic and methacrylic acids respectively and an inert diluent may be present. Arsenic may be present as oxide, arsenide, halogen or sulphur compounds or mixtures thereof, and part or all may be combined with molybdenum e.g. as arsenomolybdic acid. Other metals e.g. Fe, Cu, Pb, Co, Ni W, and Sb or oxides thereof may also be present. The catalyst may be supported on conventional carriers and in the form of a solid fixed bed, as a suspension, or as a fluid catalyst bed, and the process may be continuous. Examples describe the oxidation of propylene to give a mixture of acrylic acid, acrolein and minor amounts of acetic acid, acetaldehyde, maleic acid, acetone and oxides of carbon, which may be recycled to increase the acrylic acid yield. Specifications 822,140 and 939,713 are referred to.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst consists essentially of phospho-molybdic acid in admixture with arsenic or an arsenic-containing compound. The phospho-molybdic acid component may be made by reacting molybdenum trioxide on sodium molybdenum trioxide with phosphoric acid or may be the commercially available acid. The arsenic, preferably in the range 0,1-10%, may be in the form of oxide, acid, metallic arsenide, and halogen or sulphur compounds, or in combination with molybdenum. Metals, e.g. Fe, Cu, Pb, Co, Ni, W, may also be present together with fillers and/or carriers, such as aluminas, silica-alumina, or silicon carbides. Examples describe the preparation of the catalysts and the oxidation of olefines to unsaturated monocarboxylic acids. Specifications 822,140 and 939,713 are referred to.
