Abstract

1,237,786. Phthalic acids. CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS A.G. 8 Nov., 1968 [11 Nov., 1967], No. 53018/68. Heading C2C. A phthalic acid is obtained by catalytic oxidation with molecular oxygen of the corresponding dialkylbenzene or a dialkylbenzene carrying substituents in the alkyl groups in an aliphatic carboxylic acid having up to 8 carbon atoms or a mixture of such acids using a heavy metal/ bromine catalyst, the process having the following features:- (a) The oxygen is used in excess so that the offgas throughout the oxidation contains oxygen; (b) The catalyst is cobalt bromide or a mixture of a bromine compound and a soluble cobalt compound; and (c) The concentration of intermediate oxidation products formed during the reaction is kept below 30 gm./litre of reaction solution.
