Abstract
A process for esterifying an oxidate containing terephthalic acid and a metal oxidation catalyst with methanol, wherein said oxidate is preheated to a temperature within the range 200-350 DEG C before esterification, is characterized in that from 0,01 to 1,0 parts of methanol per part of oxidate, by volume, are added to the oxidate prior to the preheating thereof. Metal oxidation catalysts specified are chromium, manganese, cobalt, iron, nickel vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, tin and cerium in the form of salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids or aromatic acids. Starting materials mentioned for the oxidation step are xylenes, toluic acid esters, p-toluic acid and p-diisopropylbenzene. The amount of methanol added is preferably 0,01 to 0,2 parts per part of oxidate by volume. Specification 758,423 is referred to.
