Abstract

1462317 2,6-Naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 24 March 1975 [26 March 1974] 12277/75 Heading C2C A process for the production of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester comprises oxidizing 2,6-dimethyl naphthalene by means of a gas comprising molecular oxygen, in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst to produce a first oxidation product, esterifying the first oxidation product with methanol to produce a crude esterification product comprising 2,6- naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester and secondary products; separating the secondary products from the 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester; oxidizing the secondary products by means of a gas comprising molecular oxygen, in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst to produce a second oxidation product; and esterifying the second oxidation product with methanol to produce further 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester. In a preferred embodiment the process is carried out in acetic acid as solvent. Preferably the catalyst comprises a compound of cobalt and a compound of bromine, or it may be a compound containing bromine and cobalt.
