Abstract
Cycloparaffins are oxidised to the corresponding alcohols, ketones and acids by contacting them with oxygen and a conventional catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure in a first stage so that the conversion of oxygen is limited to 25-75% and then continuing the oxidation without the addition of further reactants in at least one further stage. Suitable catalysts are, for example, salts of polyvalent metals which are soluble in hydrocarbons, such as cobalt and manganese naphthenate. The conversion of oxygen may be limited in the first stage by adjusting the temperature or residence time or both. In the examples cyclohexane is oxidised to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone.
