Abstract

Cyclohexanone and other products are obtained by the catalytic decomposition of cyclohexylhydroperoxide in oxidation mixtures from cyclohexane, by means of acid or boron trifluoride, or source of metal ions, especially a cobaltous compound. In the oxidation of cyclohexane in liquid phase with molecular oxygen, which precedes the decomposition of the hydroperoxide, preferably no catalyst or very small quantities of Co-containing catalyst are employed. The products containing also some cyclohexanol may be converted directly to adipic acid. Specification 633,354 is referred to. The decomposition catalyst is introduced when the production of hydroperoxide is at a maximum so that it suffers no thermal decomposition. Examples are given in which the oxidation mixture at a concentration of peroxide of 1.57-7 per cent is withdrawn or other solutions of hydroperoxide are concentrated, and withdrawn and sulphuric acid, cobalt naphthenate, gaseous boron trifluoride, acetic acid, and perchloric acid are used to decompose the hydroperoxide to give mixtures containing a high proportion of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol after distillation and separation. Tables show the rate of decomposition of the hydroperoxide with various catalysts.
