1,237,195. Oxidation of hydrocarbons. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Dec., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 56500/67. Heading C2C. A process for the manufacture of oxygenated products, e.g. alcohols, ketones, hydroxy-acids and dicarboxylic acids comprises oxidizing a saturated hydrocarbon with a molecular oxygencontaining gas in the presence of compounds of two or more metals from Groups IIB and IVB of the Periodic System, further oxidizing, if desired, with nitric acid to convert the resultant oxygenated products to the corresponding dicarboxylic acid. Boron compounds may also be present. An example describes the oxidation of cyclohexane in the presence of zinc and lead naphthenate to yield a mixture of adipic acid, #-hydroxy caproic acid, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, which mixture is further oxidized to adipic acid by treatment with nitric acid. Cyclooctane and cyclododecane are other suitable starting materials.
