Process for the production of a mixture of cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone The oxidation of the cyclohexane can be carried out in the liquid phase with air or oxygen-containing gases under pressure at elevated temperatures. The reaction products obtained are suitable for the production of plastics and plasticizers. The oxidation products obtained are cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone and organic acids, which are mainly non-volatile, such as adipic acid, e-oxycaproic acid or their condensates. In addition, low-volatility esters such. B.
the ester of cyclohexanol with e-oxycaproic acid.
It has already been proposed that the oxidation of cyclohexane with pure oxygen or gas mixtures that contain relatively little oxygen, such as. B. air, the oxygen concentration has no effect on the type of resulting products and the yields, which are given in the previously known method for the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone mixture.
It has now been found that the known production of a mixture of cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone by oxidation of cyclohexane in the liquid phase with gases containing molecular oxygen under a pressure of a maximum of 350 at. And at a temperature of a maximum of 250 C can be performed by using an inert gas with less than 10 vol a / o oxygen.
The advantage of the lower oxygen concentration compared to the use of air for the oxidation of the cyclohexane is that the oxidation leads to more uniform reaction products due to the milder conditions, so that above all higher yields of cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone are achieved.
The method can be compared to the known methods, which are not harmless when using air, at higher pressures than were previously used. Preferred pressures for oxidation are between 50 and 250 at.
The oxidation can e.g. B. carried out in such a way that in a reaction vessel, cyclohexane is oxidized under reflux at a temperature of a maximum of 250 C and a pressure of a maximum of 350 atm. While passing through an inert gas with less than 10 vol% 02. A good distribution of the
A stirrer can be used. The amount of oxygen to be introduced is measured in such a way that the exhaust gas contains only extremely small amounts of oxygen and practically no carbon dioxide when nitrogen is used as the inert gas. Depending on the pressure and oxygen content of the gas mixture, the reaction temperatures to be maintained are expediently between 80 and 250 ° C., preferably between 100 and 200 ° C. The duration of the treatment is expediently chosen over 30 minutes; it can be several hours.
It is advisable to limit the oxidation to a conversion of a maximum of 20% by weight, preferably 5-15% by weight, of the cyclohexane. Higher sales lead to an increased yield of acids. In addition, catalysts can be used who, for. B. cobalt and silver oleates and naphthenates or other cyclohexane-soluble salts of these metals with monocarboxylic acids. At higher temperatures, they lead mainly to the formation of cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone and, if the residence time is too long, mainly to acids.
To initiate the oxidation can known Lich peroxides or organic substances that form peroxides, such. B. aldehydes and ethers can be used.
The process can be carried out continuously in a simple manner, with the unreacted cyclohexane being returned to the process.
The reaction products can be worked up by fractional distillation alone. In addition, before the distillation. first the acids are separated off by neutralization with aqueous alkalis and then separated from the aqueous solution by acidification with mineral acid and z. B. isolated by extraction.
The acidic mixture consists mainly of adipic acid and E-oxycaproic acid.
By saponifying the neutral residue from the distillation, additional amounts of cyclohexanol and acids can be obtained.
Example 14 parts by weight of cyclohexane, which contains 0.1% cobalt naphthenate in dissolved form, are introduced into a stainless steel autoclave with a volume of 20 parts by volume, which is provided with a vibromixer and a reflux condenser.
The autoclave is heated to the reaction temperature of 170 ° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere. Now 4000 l / h of a gas mixture are introduced at this temperature for 8 hours and a pressure of 70 at. With stirring, the 1.25% oxygen and 98,
Contains 75% nitrogen. After this time, the reaction product is drained through a coil condenser.
The aqueous layer is separated from the oily organic layer, whereupon both are adjusted to pH 9 with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The two aqueous solutions are combined, acidified with mineral acid and heated to the boil, where the volatile organic acids are driven out with the water. Adipic acid and 8-oxycaproic acid can be isolated from the residue by extraction with ether.
The residual water is expelled from the oily organic part in a distillation column azeotropically with cyclohexane, the cyclohexane being separated off and recycled. Finally, the cyclohexanol-cyclohexanone mixture is distilled off from the higher-boiling ester-containing residue under vacuum.
The conversion is 8.7 mol / o of the cyclohexane used, the yield of cyclohexanol / cyclohexanone is 92.8%; 2.1% of s-oxycaproic acid or its lactone and 0.71% of adipic acid.
Further quantities of cyclohexanol and acids can be obtained by saponifying the ester-containing residue.
