Abstract

Terephthalic acid is prepared by converting p-di-isopropylbenzene liquid to intermediate oxidation products by reacting with molecular oxygen at elevated temperatures with no catalyst added and then converting the intermediate oxidation products to terephthalic acid by reacting with molecular oxygen in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst and a carboxylic acid of 1-4 carbon atoms at 150-275 DEG C. and 100-1500 p.s.i.g. to maintain a liquid phase of the carboxylic acid. The catalyst may be a manganese carboxylate (e.g. manganese acetate or cumate). 0.5 to 10 parts of carboxylic acid of 1-4 carbon atoms may be used per part by weight of intermediate oxidation reaction mixture. The intermediate oxidation products may be further oxidized as a whole or may be separated into solid and liquid products and these oxidized separately. The manganese salt of p-isopropylbenzoic acid is prepared by dissolving the acid in caustic soda solution and adding manganese acetate.
