Abstract

A process for the preparation of a 2-hydroxyalkyl ester of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid which comprises reacting an aromatic polycarboxylic acid dispersed in a reaction medium which is a normally liquid inert solvent or a recirculated ester product, with an alkylene oxide having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, at a temperature from about 25ºC to about 250º c, in the presence of an effective amount of a trivalent chromium catalyst, said chromium catalyst being present in an amount of up to about 5% by weight of said acid, and recovering at least some of the 2-hydroxyalkyl ester of the aromatic polycarboxylic acid formed during the reaction.
