Abstract
Toluic acid is produced by a method comprising slowly adding nitric acid of at least 30 per cent concentration to a xylene maintained at a temperature between 120 DEG C. and the boiling point of the reaction mixture and removing water by distillation from the reaction mixture. Phthalic acid may be obtained by raising the temperature of the reaction mixture to above 140 DEG C. and continuing the slow addition of the nitric acid and the removal of water by distillation from the reaction mixture. The reaction may be carried out in an inert organic medium which is liquid at the reaction temperatures. Mixtures of the isomeric xylenes may be used and the corresponding toluic acids and phthalic acids are obtained. Mixtures of xylenes derived from coal tars or petroleum may be used as starting materials. Suitable inert organic reaction media are, for example, diphenyl, diphenyl ethers, mineral oil, chlorinated diphenyl and benzoic acid. Specification 720,385 is referred to.
