Abstract

A process for the catalytic liquid phase oxidation of a substituted aromatic charge stock, in presence of a liquid medium of C2-8 fatty acid, to an aromatic carboxylic acid product crystallizing from the medium under reaction conditions, comprises separating crude product crystals from an effluent slurry withdrawn from the reaction zone, recovering a dehydrated fatty acid fraction from residual effluent, slurry washing the crude crystals with fatty acid reaction medium comprising a major portion of recovered dehydrated acid, which washing acid is circulated to the reaction zone and drying the washed product crystals. The process is applicable to the production of terephthalic or isophthalic acid from the appropriate dialkylbenzene or alkylbenzoic acid. The usual catalysts and promoters are specified.
