Abstract

A process for the production of a partly frozen mixture of a lower aliphatic acid (defined as an aliphatic acid containing up to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule) and a lower aliphatic acid anhydride, suitable for use in the production of cellulose esters, comprises cooling the acid in the absence of the anhydride, or in the presence of less anhydride than is required in the final mixture, until the acid is partly or completely frozen, and then adding sufficient liquid anhydride to cause some of the solid acid to melt and yield a final mixture of the desired composition. Preferably the anhydride added to the solid acid is at a temperature not higher than that of the acid. The process is particularly of use for mixtures which are finally to contain more than 20 per cent of anhydride, and it may also be employed where the anhydride is derived from a different acid from the one with which it is to be mixed.
