Abstract

316,593. Ruzicka, C. Feb. 27, 1928. Cellulose carboxylates.-For the purpose of controlling the acetylation or other esterification of cellulose there is added to the acetylation &c. bath containing the total quantity of anhydride such an amount of formic acid, butyric acid, propionic acid, or a mixture thereof as corresponds to one-third or one-half of the quantity of anhydride present. A mixed ester is obtained. The bath may or may not contain a catalyst, and to it is added a part or the whole of the diluent. In an example, 100 parts cotton linters are treated in a bath containing 250 parts aceticanhydride, 100 parts formic acid, 450 acetic acid, and optionally 4 parts of sulphuric acid.
