Abstract

527,973. Cellulose esters. KODAK, Ltd. April 12, 1939, No. 11098. Convention date, April 12, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] In a process for the preparation of cellulose acetate propionate or butyrate containing not less than 10 per cent of propionyl or butyryl, the cellulose is pre-soaked in acetic acid, propionic or butyric acid is added, the the mixture cooled to less than 60‹ F. An anhydride-free solution of sulphuric acid in propionic or butyric acid is then added and the mixture kept at 40-60‹ F. for a short time. The reaction is impelled by adding an anhydride, usually acetic, sometimes propionic or butyric, with or without more sulphuric and fatty acids. The bath should contain at least 20 per cent propionyl or butyryl group, based on total content of acyl radical. In an example, cotton linters are pre-soaked with acetic acid at 130‹ F., propionic acid added, and the mixture cooled to 50‹ F. More propionic acid and some sulphuric acid are added and the mixture kept at 50‹ F. for two hours. Finally, the reaction is impelled by adding acetic anhydride, propionic and sulphuric acids previously cooled to 0-30‹ F., and the temperature allowed to reach a maximum of 80‹ F. After two hours a clear highly viscous solution free from grain and fibres is obtained. Specifications 287,880, and 313,408, [both in Class 2 (ii)], and U.S.A. Specifications 2,026,583 and 2,150,690 are referred to.
