Abstract

306,385. Schmidt, L. Feb. 18, 1928,. [Convention date]. Bornyl and isobornyl esters are obtained from pinene or oils containing pinene by a two-stage process comprising first a treatment with an organic acid anhydride-boric acid mixture containing these constituents in the approximatemolecular proportions of 3: 1 and in quantity which is not sufficient for obtaining the maximum possible yield in the esterification of thepinene, followed by treatment of the product with the organic acid, preferably in a measured excess. This two-stage process results in a yield which is 15-20 per cent higher than that obtained by effecting the esterification in a onestage operation. The process is illustrated in an example using French oil of turpentine, acetic anhydride-boric acid and glacial acetic acid, the resulting acetates being purified and saponified. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also includes the esterification of. pinene or oils containing pinene with the above organic acid anhydride-boric acid mixture in quantity sufficient to obtain the maximum yield of ester, and contaings a further example ilustrating such process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
