Abstract

Crude resinous and wax-like materials of vegetable or animal origin are decolorized by mixing them with at least 50 per cent by weight of absorptive carbon and treating the mixture with an organic solvent. Waxes such as beeswax, or shellac wax, or balsams, e.g. Peru balsams, alcoholic or ethereal extracts of vegetable materials, e.g. cannabis, or aloe, or wool fat or high molecular alcohols such as sterols are treated. The raw material may be dissolved in a solvent, e.g. non-aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzine, or esters, the absorptive carbon added and the resulting mixture extracted with a solvent different from the dissolving solvent, e.g. alcohol or a mixture of alcohol and benzene, whereby the raw material is separated into its components. 100 parts of crude wool fat are dissolved in warm benzine, and 200 parts of active carbon are stirred in. After cooling the resulting pasty mass is extracted with alcohol. The alcoholic solution is separated and distilled to yield a residue of cholesterol. The first residue of wool fat and carbon is extracted with benzine and the resulting solution distilled to yield a residue of fatty acids and esters. Before decolorizing the raw material may be prerefined, e.g. by treatment with nitric or sulphuric acid.ALSO:Crude vegetable resins, such as the ethereal or alcoholic extract of cannabis or aloe, are decolorized by mixing them with at least 50 per cent by weight of absorptive carbon and treating the mixture with an organic solvent. The crude material may be dissolved in a solvent, preferably non-aromatic hydrocarbons or esters e.g. benzine, the absorptive carbon added and the resulting mixture extracted with a solvent different from the dissolving solvent e.g. alcohol, or a mixture of alcohol and benzene, whereby the raw material is separated into its components.
