Vitamins; ergosterol esters.-An anti-rachitic substance is prepared by esterifying the unsaponifiable constituents of yeast-fat or of the corresponding extracts of ergot or similar lower fungi by usual methods and treating the ester with ultra-violet light, or treating the ergosterol with ultraviolet light and then esterifying the activated product. Water-soluble products are obtained when the esterification is accompanied by the introduction of salt forming groups. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) mentions the acetic ester of ergosterol which is stated to be when activated, a yellowish resinous substance. soluble in most of the ordinary solvents, especially alcohol and oils. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
