Abstract

321,442. Tinling, J. A. Aug. 2, 1928. Borneol and isoborneol are obtained by treating pinene or camphene with anhydrides of acyl aromatic carboxylic acids, for example the anhydride of o-benzoylbenzoic acid or the mixed anhydride of acetic and o-benzoylbenzoic acids. Bornyl and isobornyl esters are thus obtained in 75 per cent yields. The process is illustrated in an example in which boroacetic acid or anhydroboric acid may be used as a catalyst, the esters formed being separated and saponified by the usual means. Specification 281,468 is referred to.
