Abstract

Cellulose esters are prepared by subjecting to the usual process of esterfication a cellulose derivative obtained on treating cellulose with nitric acid in the presence of nitrobenzene. In an example, cotton is treated with a mixture of nitric acid and nitrobenzene, and the product after washing and drying is warmed with a mixture of glacial acetic acid, acetic anhydride, and bromine or other catalyst, as indicated in Specification 10706/12; the acetate is separated in the usual manner by dilution with water, and may be hydrolyzed before or after separation.
