Abstract
Esters of 2-ethylbutanol-1 with aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting the alcohol with the acids or their anhydrides in the presence or absence of an esterification catalyst. Examples are given of the preparation of di(2-ethylbutyl) succinate and phthalate; in each example, sulphuric acid is present as an esterification catalyst, and benzene is added to the mixture to facilitate the distillation of the water formed in the reaction. Reference is made also to the manufacture of esters of dicarboxylic acids in which one carboxylic group is esterified with 2-ethylbutanol-1 and the other carboxylic group is esterified with another aliphatic alcohol. The products are useful as solvents in the manufacture of varnishes and other coating-compositions, and as plasticizers or stabilizers for natural or synthetic resins.ALSO:As solvents in the manufacture of varnishes and other coating compositions, use is made of esters of 2-ethylbutanol-1 with aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acids. The esters specified are di(2-ethylbutyl) succinate and phthalate. Reference is made also to esters of dicarboxylic acids in which one carboxylic group is esterified with 2-ethylbutanol-1 and the other carboxylic group is esterified with another aliphatic alcohol.ALSO:As plasticizers or stabilizers for natural or synthetic resins, use is made of esters of 2-ethyl-butanol-1 with aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acids.
