Abstract
Aliphatic diesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids are obtained on heating, e.g. at 100-140 DEG C., an aliphatic monoester of the acid with an aliphatic hydroxy compound, distilling off water produced together with unchanged hydroxy compound, adding additional hydroxy compound to the reagents and distilling and continuing the process until the distillate is substantially free from water. It is preferred that acidic catalysts such as sulphuric acid and alkali metal bisulphates be present and that the hydroxy compound be slowly added to the reaction mixture in order that the maximum amount of water is removed therewith. In a modification the acid or its anhydride is heated with 2-3 mols. of the hydroxy compound, the monoester first formed being converted in situ to the diester by the above process. Acids specified are phthalic acid and hydrogenated phthalic, e.g. di- and tetra-hydrophthalic acids and hydroxy compounds specified are methanol, ethanol, the propanols, normal and secondary butanols and glycol ethers, e.g. ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. In examples: (1) mono-methyl-, (2) mono-n-butyl and (3) mono-(methoxy-ethyl)-phthalate obtained by heating the appropriate hydroxy compound with phthalic acid in the presence of a small proportion of sulphuric acid are converted without isolation into the corresponding diester.
