Abstract

Acidified hydrosilicates are used as catalysts in the production of hydroxy-alkyl compounds by acting with alkylene oxides on organic compounds containing reactive hydrogen atoms i.e. on alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, and primary and secondary amines. The acidification of suitable hydrosilicates, and also the drying or rinsing of the acidified bodies in order to reduce their acidity are described. Specification 271,169, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.ALSO:Hydroxy-alkyl compounds are obtained by acting with alkylene oxides on organic compounds containing reactive hydrogen atoms, i.e. on alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, and primary or secondary amines in the presence of acidified hydrosilicates, preferably at temperatures between 40 DEG and 200 DEG C. The preparation of the catalysts by acidification of suitable hydrosilicates followed, if desired, by drying, is described. It is preferred to use catalysts which will furnish a pH below 3, preferably between 1,5 and 2, when mixed with water. When the reaction is complete, the catalyst may be filtered off and the product separated by fractional distillation. Examples are given of the production from suitable initial materials of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, a -propylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethylene glycol monophenyl ether, dihydroxyethyl aniline, N-hydroxy-ethyl butyl aniline, dihydroxy-ethyl paraaminophenol, tetrahydroxyethyl benzidine, ethylene glycol monoisopropyl ether, propylene glycol mono-isopropyl ether, ethylene glycol mono-2-butyl ether, ethylene glycol mono-2-chlorethyl ether, butylene glycol mono-ethyl ether together with the mono-ethyl ethers of di- and polybutylene glycols, the ethylene glycol ether of tertiary butyl alcohol, and ethylene glycol mono-acetate. The catalysts specified are "Tonsil AC," "Tonsil C," "Frankonit S," "Frankonit F," and "Frankonit KL." Specification 271,169, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
